Among the professional evaluation standards for spinning bicycles, there are a few words that are most commonly mentioned, such as smoothness, flywheel, resistance mode, Q value, brakes, sound, etc. I will use straightforward words in the following explanations. Language description for everyone.
1. Smoothness
Smoothness is the core factor in judging the comfort of a spinning bike. The flywheel and transmission determine the smoothness of a spinning bike.
Generally speaking, the heavier the flywheel, the better the riding experience. If the flywheel is less than 5kg, it is too light. In addition to being divided by weight, flywheels are also divided into front flywheels and rear flywheels.
There are two main transmission methods for spinning bicycles. One is chain transmission converted from bicycles, which is noisy; the other is belt transmission, which is basically silent.
2. Cushions and footrests
The riding experience of a spinning bike depends largely on its comfort. When it comes to comfort, the seat cushion and pedals cannot be ignored. Many spinning bikes put some effort into the comfort of their seat cushions. The anti-slip degree of the pedals is also very important. It is very dangerous if your feet slip when riding at high speed.
3. Resistance adjustment method
The resistance adjustment method of a spinning bicycle is directly related to the price and noise level of the bicycle.
Friction-type resistance adjustment generally uses wool felt or cowhide to increase resistance through friction. This type of resistance adjustment is a common configuration for household use. It has low cost and good simulation performance, but it makes a relatively loud sound and needs to be replaced regularly. The smoothness is not very good.
Magnetic-controlled resistance adjustment uses changes in the distance between magnets to achieve the purpose of adjusting resistance. The biggest advantage is that there is no sound, almost completely silent, and maintenance-free but the cost is high. Electromagnetic control is currently the most technologically advanced method of adjusting resistance.
4. Brake
There is a “STOP” button on the spinning bike. Pressing it lightly has no effect. You need to press it harder to stop. Friction-type resistance-adjusted bicycles brake through the friction of brake pads (wool felt/cowhide), while magnetic-controlled bicycles brake based on the physical principle of magnets. In comparison, friction-type bicycles are faster and easier to stop.
5. Baking paint
The paint can directly reflect the texture of the spinning bike. The quality of the paint depends on whether the manufacturer is willing to pay the cost. You can distinguish this with the naked eye, so I won’t go into details here.
6. QF value
QF value, full name Q factor, is commonly known as Q value, which means the distance between the outer edges of the two cranks of a bicycle.
In practical applications, a smaller Q value is more conducive to power generation and vehicle body control. It also reduces the windward area to a certain extent to reduce wind resistance. The design of the frame can also be more streamlined, and the Q value can be less than 18cm. It’s relatively outstanding.
